Who this is
Self Employed Somehow is a free community run by Bren Russell, trading as Podlad. You can reach me directly at info@podlad.com.
For the purposes of data protection law, I'm the data controller for the personal data described below.
What I collect, and why
When you book an intro call. The booking form (run through TidyCal, a third party scheduling tool) collects your name, email address, and anything you choose to write in the notes field. I use this to arrange and run the call, and to decide together whether the community is a fit. Lawful basis: consent, and my legitimate interest in running an application process that keeps the group the right size.
When you join the WhatsApp group. I collect your phone number and whatever profile information WhatsApp itself displays (name, photo, if you've set one). This is used to add you to the group and keep it running. Lawful basis: consent, given when you're added after your intro call.
When you visit this website. Squarespace, the platform this site runs on, may collect standard technical data such as IP address, browser type, and pages visited, and may set cookies for site functionality and basic analytics. Lawful basis: legitimate interest in understanding how the site is used, and consent where required for non-essential cookies.
I don't collect payment information anywhere on this site. The community is currently free to join.
Who I share it with
- TidyCal, to run the booking calendar.
- WhatsApp (Meta), to run the group.
- Squarespace, to host the site.
I don't sell your data, and I don't share it with anyone beyond what's needed to run the tools above.
Some of these providers are based outside the EEA, most likely the US. Where that's the case, they're required to have safeguards in place for that transfer, such as the EU-US Data Privacy Framework or standard contractual clauses. I haven't personally audited each provider's certification, and you're welcome to ask me for what I know.
How long I keep it
Booking details are kept for as long as needed to arrange the call and for a reasonable period after, in case of a repeat booking. WhatsApp group data exists for as long as you're a member, and is removed from my side if you leave or ask to be removed. I don't keep data indefinitely for no reason.
Your rights
Under GDPR, you can ask me to:
- tell you what personal data I hold about you
- correct anything that's inaccurate
- delete your data
- restrict or object to how it's used
- receive a copy of your data in a portable format
- withdraw consent at any time, which won't affect anything done before that
To do any of this, email me at info@podlad.com. If you don't think I've handled something properly, you also have the right to complain to Ireland's Data Protection Commission at dataprotection.ie.
Children
This community is for freelancers and self employed adults. It isn't intended for, and I don't knowingly collect data from, anyone under 18.
Changes to this policy
If this changes, I'll update the date at the top. If the change is significant, I'll let current members know directly rather than relying on you to check back.
